Step Back in Time at Lamphey Bishop’s Palace

Things To Do In Pembrokeshire

Explore One Of Pembrokeshire's Oldest Hidden Historic Gems

Tucked away in the quiet village of Lamphey, just a short walk from Lamphey Court Hotel, you’ll find one of Pembrokeshire’s hidden historical gems - Llys yr Esgob Llandyfái, also known as Lamphey Bishop’s Palace. Peaceful, atmospheric, and full of character, it’s the perfect place to explore if you’re into a bit of local history or just fancy a scenic stroll with a story or two.

The palace dates back to the 1200s and was originally built as a countryside retreat for the bishops of St David’s. Life was busy in the church back then, so they created this little escape where they could unwind in style. Over time, the site grew into an impressive complex with a great hall, private rooms, a chapel, and even landscaped grounds.

It’s easy to picture how grand it once was - and much of the stonework is still standing, from soaring windows to arched walkways. You can wander through the ruins at your own pace and imagine the lives of the people who once called it home.

One fascinating detail? It’s believed that Henry Tudor (later Henry VII) was conceived here in 1456, making this peaceful ruin a small but significant part of royal history.

The palace is managed by Cadw, and entry is completely free. There’s no need to book - just turn up and enjoy the space. It’s open daily, and although the visitor centre is currently closed (visit their website for full details), the grounds are well looked after and easy to access.
